Cerebral
Palsy is a term that describes a group of disorders
that affect movement control. It is classified into
four categories according to the type of disturbance
in movement as follows:
Spastic -
is characterized by muscles which are stiff and permanently
contracted. Spastic cerebral palsy is often described
by doctors based on the limbs affected, and whether
the affected limb is paralyzed (plegia) or weak (paresis).
Spastic cerebral palsy may affect one (hemiparesis)
or both limbs.
Atheoid
or dyskinetic -
cerebral palsy is characterized by uncontrolled
movements of the hands, feet, arms, or legs and,
in some cases, the muscles of the face and tongue.
Ataxic -
affects sense of balance and depth perception. Typically,
persons affected by ataxic cerebral palsy have poor
coordination, walk unsteadily and exhibit difficulty
when attempting quick or precise movements.
Mixed
forms -
Persons with cerebral palsy have symptoms of more
than one of the previous three forms. The most
common mixed form includes spasticity and athetoid
movements.
ERB'S
PALSY - BRACHIAL PLEXUS INJURIES:
The Brachial
Plexus is a network of nerves that conducts
signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and
hand. Brachial plexus injuries are caused by damage
to those nerves. Although injuries can occur at
any time, many brachial plexus injuries happen
when a baby’s shoulders become impacted during
delivery and the brachial plexus nerves stretch
or tear. Symptoms of brachial plexus injury may
include a limp or paralyzed arm; lack of muscle
control in the arm, hand, or wrist, and lack of
feeling or sensation in the arm or hand.
Erb-Duchenne
(Erb’s) palsy refers to
paralysis of the upper brachial plexus.
Dejerine-Klumpke
(Klumpke’s) palsy refers
to paralysis of the lower brachial plexus.
There
are four types of brachial plexus injuries:
avulsion -
the most severe type, in which the nerve is torn
from the spine;
rupture -
in which the nerve is torn but not at the spinal
attachment;
neuroma -
in which the nerve has torn and healed but scar tissue
puts pressure on the injured nerve and prevents it
from conducting signals to the muscles; and
neuropraxia - in
which the nerve has been damaged but not torn. Neuropraxia
is the most common type of brachial plexus injury.
Symptoms of brachial plexus injury may include a
limp or paralyzed arm; lack of muscle control in
the arm, hand, or wrist, and lack of feeling or sensation
in the arm or hand.
CAN
CEREBRAL PALSY BE TREATED?
Management" is
a better word than "treatment." Management
consists of helping the child achieve maximum potential
in growth and development. This should be started
as early as possible with identification of the very
young child who may have a developmental brain disorder.
A management program can then be started promptly
wherein programs, physicians, therapists, educators,
nurses, social workers, and other professionals assist
the family as well as the child. Certain medications,
surgery, and braces may be used to improve nerve
and muscle coordination and prevent or minimize dysfunction.
